What to Expect from Your First Counselling Session

What to Expect from Your First Counselling Session

Starting counselling can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to feel unsure about what to expect. Many people arrive at their first session feeling nervous, uncertain, or even worried they won’t know what to say. That’s completely normal. Counselling is not about performing or getting things “right”, it’s about creating a safe space where you can simply be yourself.

In your initial session, we’ll take time to get to know each other. You’ll have the opportunity to share what’s brought you to counselling, and we’ll explore what you’d like to gain from the process. There’s no pressure to share everything at once, you decide the pace, and it’s perfectly okay to begin slowly.

We’ll also talk through the practicalities, such as how sessions work, confidentiality, and any questions you may have. The first session is as much about you getting a feel for me as a therapist as it is about me learning more about you. The therapeutic relationship is at the heart of this work, so it’s important you feel comfortable and supported.

Think of your first counselling session as opening the door to a safe and private space. It’s a chance to pause, breathe, and begin to make sense of what you’re experiencing. From there, we’ll move forward together at a pace that feels right for you.

If you’re considering counselling, why not begin with a free initial consultation? It’s a gentle way to see how therapy might support you, without any pressure.
